The Charity Post

I hope you have done it. I hope you and your loved-ones have already pondered how you intend to create Christmas. I hope you have picked your charitable (or neighborly) purposes and have already made plans to donate a little difference. Join in the conspiracy.

In not, call a family meeting. If your family is spread across the country, call them, email them, send a facsimile, use Morse code, or create an intricate system of smoke signals to get the word out-”we’re creating a little bit of Christmas this year.”

And then, when you have…

List those for whom you intend to create Christmas this year. It may be a charity, a church, or an individual. Maybe it is Habitat. Maybe it is Love146. Maybe it is A Glimmer. Or what about Compassion?

I am reading your post on tell me your charity and I will take you up on that. what makes my heart race is The Jack Ryan Gillham Foundeation. (www.jackryangillham.org) Jack Ryan was the son of a dear friend of mine who passed away from complications due to congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Rare birth defect. We have a still small but yet impactful effort going to financaily help families in our area who have critically ill babies. I am proudly on the Board of Directors.

We contribute to the Melissa George Neonatal Intensive Care Fund at Huntsville Hospital. We don’t do too much because we can’t afford to but we do what we can. At Christmas we started a tradition of getting our son an ornament from there where all the procedes go to them. We always want our son to know about how he started and how far he’s come. http://www.huntsvillehospital.org/foundation/melissageorgefund/

Our son was only there a week but the staff and volunteers made such an impact on us that it has made us want to give back to the people who helped us.

This year my family and I have decided that we will cut back on what we usually spend on gifts and donate money to Love 146 and Smile Train. Several of the people that we usually get gifts for have generously asked us to contribute the money that we would spend on them to both of those charities. We will make cookies and meals for our nearby neighbors and we will also donate a gift for a needy child through our church’s Giving Tree program. We are so fortunate and blessed as a family to just be together at Christmas. Gifts are fun but giving and doing makes our hearts glad!

As a knitter, my heart holds a special place for The Heifer Project, and specifically for the “knitter’s baskets” you can purchase to help a family become fiber-growers. For the past few years, Ive had my kindergarten Sunday School class raise money to buy a beehive. THey get so excited to see the bee stickers go up on our chart and count them each week to see if we’ve got enough “bees” to buy a hive!
